This 2026 visit to Death Valley was my first road trip with my then-new partner and my first time in Death Valley. We were incredibly lucky that a wet fall had created the right conditions for one of the valley’s rare superblooms and the appearance of Lake Manly, phenomena that only occur about once a decade. These Desert Gold flowers carpeted the desolate valley floor with shallow Lake Manly in the background.

These badlands used to be an ancient lake before the formation of nearby mountains dried everything out. Today Death Valley is not only the largest national park in the contiguous US, but it’s also the hottest, driest, and lowest. Here you can go from the lowest point in North America, 282 ft below sea level, to 11,000 ft above sea level at Telescope Peak.
